A 13-year-old driver was injured in a car crash yesterday afternoon around 2:25 p.m.
A 1999 Ford Ranger driven by Samantha Wintz age 13, from Caledonia was drivng north on Lyons Road near Linn Hipsher Road when she went off the right side of the road, over-corrected and hit a ditch. Rolling the vehicle multiple times before coming to a stop.
According to Sgt. Brandon Spalding with the Ohio Highway Patrol, Wintz was not wearing her safety belt at the time and suffered unknown injuries. The vehichle also had passenger, Brittany Brodman age 14, from Caledonia She was wearing her seatbelt and suffered only minor injuries. Brodman went to a neighbor’s house and called 9-1-1 after the crash.
The driver Samantha Wintz was reportedly unconscious at the scene but later regained consciousness and gave a report to the patrol officers and Marion General Hospital.
The two girls were then transported to Marion General Hospital and Samantha Wintz was later transported to Nationwide Children’s Hospital in Columbus by helicopter.
According to Sgt. Brandon Spalding they did not have permission to use the vehicle and speed as well as driver inexperience were contributing factors in the crash.
The crash remains under investigation. and no charges have been made yet.
