Dan Russell and Kerr Murray have spent more than two weeks waiting for the official decision in their race for Marion County Commissioner, and they'll have to wait another eight days to finally have this election settled.

The County Board of Elections released the results of 862 qualifying provisional ballots Tuesday evening and the results saw the incumbent Russell retain his position as Commissioner after coming from behind to beat his Republican challenger Murray.

After the inital votes had been counted on Nov. 6, Murray led Russell by only 68 votes, but the final count showed Russell winning by 111 votes--but it may not be over yet. Since the margin of victory was within 0.5%, a mandatory recount will be held on Nov. 29.

Also in that race, Independant candidate Al Gruber got 6,518 votes--just more than 3,000 shy of Russell's winning total.

The Commissioner's race wasn't the only election being decided by provisional ballots; Marion County issue five, the 0.25% sales tax increase to aid the Sheriffs Dept., ended up failing by 242 votes. The total means this issue doesn't qualify for a recount--it had trailed by 112 votes before the final tally.
