The State Highway Patrol Marion post is investigating a fatal crash from this weekend in which a bicyclist was struck by a car. The patrol says that 18-year-old Nathan Smith of Marion was on his bike shortly after midnight Saturday on Fairgrounds Road, east of Likens Chapel Road. That's when Smith was hit by a car driven by 20-year-old John Kearns Jr., also of Marion. The patrol’s report states that Kearns was traveling west in his Honda Civic on Fairgrounds Road and was attempting to pass another motorist heading in the same direction. Smith also was heading west on his bike and was struck from behind by Kearns. Smith was transported to the Marion General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The report says that Smith was not wearing a helmet or any other safety equipment at the time of the crash. According to the patrol, Kearns initially left the scene but later returned. Kearns was not injured in the crash.
