Marion County voters will decide whether to approve a quarter-percent sales tax increase in November; this comes after the county commissioners decided yesterday to place the issue on the ballot. The board voted 2-1 in favor of asking voters to approve the tax increase after the issue was discussed at length during the meeting where there were residents for and against the idea. If approved, the revenue from the tax increase will be divided, with 40-percent going to the sheriff’s office, 30-percent to the jail, 20-percent spread among other county departments and the remaining 10-percent toward capital improvements. Sheriff Tim Bailey said he would use the revenue to bring back deputies and dispatchers lost to budget cuts.
